Purpose of Establishment
- To re-education the abilities lost due to the brain damage caused by the stroke
- To reconstruct the independence of the patient and facilitate to reach a better quality of life
- To conduct clinical researches to evaluate the effectiveness of the novel treatment methods
What We Do
The rehabilitation period for stroke may vary by the severity and complications of stroke. Some patients recover rapidly after stroke whereas in the majority of the patients rehabilitation period is a long-term process which is monitored by the stroke unit in outpatient and inpatient clinics using the treatment methods listed below.
- Treatments increasing muscle power and coordination to improve motor functions
- Decreasing muscle spasticity by the aid of exercise and other treatment methods and restoring the range of motion
- Mobility studies and teaching how to use walking aids such as crutches, walker or canes
- Management of and training for related bladder-bowel dysfunction in coordination with the relevant departments
- Teaching the patients alternative methods of communicating with their social environment to manage impaired communication
- To manage difficulty in swallowing secondary to the stroke and regulate nutrition
- Providing psychological support by consultation with the other specialists dealing with the mental health, if and when needed
Working Days
Stroke Outpatient Clinic located in the ground floor of the inpatient unit building of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department of Faculty of Istanbul Medicine serves on Tuesdays once in every two weeks from 08.30 to 12.30.
How to Apply?
After scheduling an appointment from Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department of Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine by dialing 0 (212) 414 20 00, stroke patients are first examined in the general outpatient clinic and directed to the stroke outpatient clinic, if indicated.
